Jan 7th 63 Govenor Yates Honerable Sir I take the privelege of adressing you a few lines concerning our Civil authorties in Chicago I mean our police and comisioners hopeing you will not think it a step of impropiety for a lady to do so my complaints is as follows first they arrest boys from 12 to 14 years of age and they go to there condemed cells and tell them that the thief and Highwaymen and murderer are pictured in there countnance and not only Say so to the boys but to there distracted parents Such expressions from officers who are employed to protect <hr /> our citizens and our rights Such talk to youths will only encourage them in there bad carere we think and I think and thousands of others that these police ought to be removed or some honest relible man Sent to govern them and Secondly poor unfourtunly drunken men who labor hard for there familys dayly and are arested to our police Station houses and if they hoping to ask for a drink of water are knocked down and kicked into there cells and called most abusive names not proper for a lady to pen and also lanuage for not proper for officers to use I see in the Chicago times of the 5th ints where Govenor Seymore of New York had called the police comisnors to Albany to bring them to an <hr /> ancount for the misconduc of the New York city police, witch cannot excell the misconduct of our own police there is a Jew on the Secrete police who goes to the amorys and bails out poor unfourtanate wimon and men for $5.00 and $10 dollars witch he divides with the Capt of police and Sargents when this Jew and the captains gets short of funds they go and arest unfourtunate men and wimon then this Jew will stay around the prison till late hours and all them that has dimond rings and money he will bail them out these are just Slight complaints to some depridations our officers do and I hope you will carefuly look over this and will administer Justice to our great and noble city <hr /> third and last I have said anything about our thiefing Officers when parties are arested there money is taken away from them and left at the gate and when the prisoner is locked up a part of the money is abstracted from there pockett books and when the prisoner ask for there money in the morning they will say part of the money is gone he will then ask the Officer for it then the officer in reply will Say get out that is all you had I will conclude hear with my best Wishes and thanks for the Service you have bestowed upon the country and State and hope you will intercede in behalf of the citizens of Chicago I am your Humble Servant Mrs T H Thornton Mich Ave <hr /> Mrs. T. Vermont Illinois Jan 12th 1863 Hon Rich Yates Worthy Sir I wrote you as much as three weeks since in behalf of a Woman in this Community whose husband is in the Army, and as I have no answer I suspect it has been mislaid amid the busy rush attending the assembly of the Legislature. He has been in the Hospital 9 months and there has not been at any time a hope of his getting well (afflicted with sore eyes) all we want is instructions how to move to obtain his release; his wife was with him at one time but could not effect any thing. Benton Barracks January 8th 1863 Gov Yates Springfield Ills Dr Sir I See in this morning St Louis Democrat a letter from Mr Robb to your excellency in reference to Forrests raid on the Mo & Ohio Rail Road in which Mr Robb does me injustice (not intentially, I presume) He Says that the Reble Commander had quietly taken posession of Trenton - quietly for the reason the force stationed at that place having been moved to Jackson, thus being the case Col Fry the Post Commander had nothing to do but to give up his Sword &c. It is true that all my forces including the Artillary had been ordered to Jackson by Genl Sulevan against my judgment of its propriety. The same order applied to all the Post from Jackson to Columbus leaving those Post without forces to defend them and making them and the Road an easy prise to the enemy Genl Sulivans order to me was to send all my available force with the Artillary to Jackson reserving only the convelesent for gard duty This I done. I had previously made a very strong defence by way of Rifle pots around my Artillary <hr /> by which of my Artillary and men had not ben withdrawn could have whoped Forrest with his whole force But as it was I was compelled to make the best arangment I could I therefore mad my defense at the depot with Cotton Bales and got all my little force there determaned to make the best defense I could when the enemy came - knowing that Forrest was moving towards Trenton I Telegraphed Genl Davies at Columbus on Friday my condition and that I expected an attack [illegible] but he refused to Send any reinforcements notwithstanding he had both men & artillary and Columbus never was in any danger from Forrest. I had my scouts out and they reported to me Forrests movements from which I became satisfied that his movements towards Jackson was only a feint to cover his move on Trenton and the Road above Jackson. On Saterday morning Telegraphed to Genl Sulivan that the enemy lay that night at Spring Creek 20 Miles from Trenton and that he was moving upon me but I got no releaf from that quarter My Scouts reported them within three or four miles advancing upon us I then drew in all my Pickets and gards in and got all my little force within the Brest works and wated the approach of the enemy - At three oclock he made his appearance by a heavy charge in two colums <hr /> with his Cavarly they were hansomly repulsed with considerable loss both in killed and wounded we lost one man killed none wounded his Cavarly then dashed off out of range of our guns he then planted his Batteries and commenced Shelling us we having don all that was possable under the circumstances on consultatn with the officer the surrender was made - Enclosed I send you a statment of the affare published in the M Republican which gives a very correct account of the matter - I confes that I do not understand the propriety of the Consentratn of the forces at Jackson as it was done. Yates - The object of sending it to you was to obtain your services in delivering it into the hands of the Govr - The object of the letter, was to obtain the assistance of Gov. Yates to get a furlough for Mr. Julius Brown, who has been very sick of Tiphoid fever & was in the General Hospital at Jackson Tenn. Not having heard any thing from you or Govr. Yates, Mrs Brown is fearful the letter miscarried - & I promised her to write to you on the subject. Mr. Brown is a highly respected citizen of this place & writes to his wife there is no prospect of his so regaining his health while in Hospital, as to render any service to his country - His wife thinks that from his constitution & the effect a similar <hr /> disease had on a Brother of Mr Brown's that he never will regain his health, so as to endure the hardship of a Soldiers life - will you be so good as to write me whether the letter was recd & whether the Govr could or would interfere. If the Govr. said nothing to you on the subject of the letter, will you call his attention to it & inform me what he says - If he cannot interfere ask who has the power? I am sorry to trouble you on this occasion but I & all my family feel a great deal of sympathy for Mrs. Brown & her family - My wife is on a visit to Galesburgh to see old Mr. Coffin & wife & will be back on Monday or Tuesday.
