Palmer and myself proceeded to Mercer, Knox, Henderson, McDonough & Hancock Counties, for the purpose of procuring men and Companies for the 100 days service, to rendezvous at Quincy (under your order to Gen Harding) for the purpose of forming a Regiment. We have labored faithfully and secured up to this time Eight Companies, five of whom are now at Quincy, two more will go tomorrow and one has unadvisedly gone to Rock Island, but which is anxious to return to Quincy. Ohio May 16th 1864 Governor Yates Dear Sir I am a soldier's wife, this is my home, but my husband enlisted in Quincy, Illinois in Company G 5th Illinois Cavalry. his name is Albert Willits. he enlisted on the 10th of September 1861. he was taken prisoner near Jackson Mississippi by guerillas the 24th of last July. The last time I heard from him was last September, he was then a prisoner in Belle Island. Since he has been a prisoner I find it hard to get along with two children to support by my own exertions. I have applied to the committee here appointed to provide for soldier's families and was told that the law would not allow them to assist me as my husband did not enlist here and was advised to apply <hr /> to you.
