My very Dear Mrs Yates

I am anxious to know how you enjoyed your day's ride home, and how you find yourselves after your journey and visit. I need not say I hope that you are all improved and that my Darling Dickey will soon be able to dig and shovel in the most approved style. He shall soon have the pleasure of seeing Henry I hope, and then we shall learn all particulars. Jamie returned Saturday morning, and very much regretted that you had left.

I called at Shays and returned the drawers. The girl said the Lady told her to put up a "pair of drawers and she did so" A new idea I thought and I said does a pair of

From the present price of Stockings it will be an object perhaps for us when we purchase and pay for a pair to take her ground that she does, and insist that a pair means two pairs!. She returned me the price one dollar seventy five cents $1.75, which I inclose. I had half a mind to look after the handkerchiefs which you spoke of and expend the money there but if you desire it I will purchase them at any time or do any other shopping you may desire with the greatest pleasure.

Miss Brennen is here, and we are having a great time in altering and mending for the Children

I expect I shall leave on Friday Morning with the Children for Miss Ingalls. Miss Minnie Bellamy one of our neighbors doubtless expects to accompany us to attend school. Hoping soon to hear from you with very much love to yourself the governor, and your precious family I am most affectionately yours

Al. B Woodworth

Please tell darling Dickey that Aunt Al was disappointed and very sorry that he did not come back to give me the Kiss. I waited impatiently for your return until Pat returned and said that you were just starting as he left. I hope you will soon find it convenient to visit Chicago again, when we

Please ask the governor if it would not be well when he speaks here to make an appeal for the Soldier's Orphan fund. It seems to me it is possible at that time to get thousands of dollars subscribed. I saw Mr Baker yesterday. his brother the Surgeon is slowly improving. He seemed deeply affected in his renewed affection. A bright light burst upon us in the taking of [Alalanta?] after the smudge and smoke of the dimocratic Convention. Excuse all and please write soon. Lovingly Yours

I was sorry I did not see you again before you left the city - when I saw you last I was to call with a carriage at 4 PM to take you to ride. Just as I was ordering the carriage - your friend Mr Church called and asked me to resigne in his favor. under the circumstances I had no alternative but to give up to him - I mention this as you may have thought it strange I did not call - I should be reluctant to believe that Mr Church came to me as he did with your Consent or Knowledge = Before the canvass is closed I hope to have the pleasure of seeing you and Mrs Yates at My Country home - please let me remind you of your promise

Dear Sir

Your favor of my 28th was duly received and I hasten to answer

There is a proposition made to the 141st Regt to be mustered out when our time expires and to reorganise as a Regiment or as independant companies for the purpose of waring against the Indians on the Frontier.

I think myself to mount the men on horses and properly arm the they can be of great service to the government. I think we can be permitted to so organize and as a general thing we have a fine set of men.

Should we gain such permission I hope you will remember me and I will have proper authority to raise a company as I have some 40 or 50 names already

Yours Truly

                    <text>
Geneva Ill Sept 1. 1864

Dear Governor:

In my recent letter requesting you to come to Geneva and speak, I thoughtlessly omitted to offer you the hospitalities of my house, which I take occasion now to do. Our Hotels, like most village taverns, afford rather indifferent accommodations. It will give me much pleasure to entertain you

Very Truly Yours

Isaac G. Wilson

P.S. McLean was at the Elgin Convention. You have no firmer friend than he is although he felt a little hurt about the slaughter of Joslyn as Colonel of the 141st.

I enclose a copy of my resolution passed by the convention unanimously

I.G.W.

Resolved, That the Hon. Richard Yates, our present distinguished Governor, by his noble and patriotic devotion to the cause of our imperiled country, and his untiring efforts to alleviate the sufferings of our soldiers in the field and in camp, has justly endeared himself to the hearts of the loyal people of this State, and earned the proud appellation of the “soldiers' friend;” that the glorious record he has made for the State which gave to the country Abraham Lincoln,” entitles him to the gratitude of the people, and that he is the unanimous choice of the delegates to this Convention for United States Senator, at the next session of our State Legislature.

RACE TO COMMENCE at 4 O'CLOCK.

For the accomodatiok of the public a special train of cars will leave the Chicago, Alton and St. Louis Depot at 8 o'clock for the course, and return as soon as the race is over. Fare for the round trip, fifty cents.

The above field of horses comprises some of the best trotters in the West. They are very evenly matched, and one of the fastest and best contested races ever seen in the West may confidently be anticipated, taking into consideration the immense concourse of strangers now visiting the city during the sitting of the Convention, will necessarily be seeking some source of amusement which fact of itself give almost positive assurance of a very large attendance. And my object being more to make sport than money, I have determined to put the price of admission to all parts of the track at the low price of fifty cents.

Wilson Isaac G.

Geneva. Spt. 1st 1864

In his invitation to Govr to come there speak, he thoughtlessly omitted to offer him Hospitality of his house which he now does.

                <text>

To his Excellency, Governor Yates.

We The undersigned citizens of Wardford Co. have been appointed by the citizens of the several Townships in the county, to secure, if possible as reduction of our quota in the forthcoming draft.

Having thorougly examined the facts in regard to the assignment of our quota, we are satisfied that great injustice has been done, and have, therefore determined to address you setting forth certain facts, and our grievances

From announcements in the newspapers, we understood that Illinois would only be required to furnish 16,000 men. We now find that, instead of the state being considered a unit, Each subdistrict is taken as a unit in apportioning the quotas and consequently that the State is actually to be drafted for 39,000 men

By examining the credits, we find that we are not credited with the actual number of men furnished owing to the inacuracy of the Rolls of /61 & /62

Companies in one county have obtained recruits in adjoining Counties and all have been credited to the county in which the companys were organized.

As a result, one county has an excess another a deficit upon the Rolls, while in fact, each has furnished an equal proportion. Such is the fact in Woodford Co.

While we could not ask the authorities to go back of the Rolls, for evidence of credits owing the interminable difficulties in that method. and while we do not ask to have the excesses transferred to the deficient Counties, we do feel justified in asking as a partial measure of justice, that the deficient Counties be required only to furnish the actual deficit of the State by 16,000

The government will thus obtain the full number of men required from the State, the deficient Counties will get a partial Credit for the men actually furnished, without injustice to the Counties in excess and will still be liable on future calls.

Again, we have only had five days notice of the demands made upon our County

The quota of Woodford, as announced is 569, This would be reduced one half, by the method above suggested. With a reasonable time, we believe that Woodford could raise the number by volunteers. We have heretofore honored all calls upon our patriotism and are not willing to remain behind now. Believing that the liberality with which Illinois has responded to all calls for soldiers, places you in a position to demand of Government, a candid hearing and as far as possible justice. we would respectfully ask that you endeavor to secure a ruling in accordance with the foregoing suggestions, and a postponement of the draft, untill an effort is made to fill the quota by volunteers

Having no other method of bringing our grievances to the notice of the War Dpt. We feel justified in making this appeal to you.

And as My present Salary is not sufficient to meet my current expenses you see it would be to me a perfect "God send".

Will you Gov. be kind enough to write me a good strong letter of recommendation to Secretary Fessenden recommending me as suitable and well qualified for the duties of "Revenue Agent" under the 4th Section of the Revenue law of June 1864

The duties are about similar to that of a Special Mail Agent, This section defines the duties as follows Viz: "To aid in prevention, detection and punishments of frauds" upon the collections of Revenue &c. It will require extensive travel and require active movements, energy & and tact, being much abroad amongst the people all of which I can do and do effectually.

If this appointment could be, as I hope to have it done urged and urged strongly upon the Secretary I could the sooner carry out my desire as expressed in a letter to you not long since to return to Illinois and cooperate with my friends in the comeing political contests. Now Gov. help me if you please say as much as your tender conscience will allow you to say in my behalf and I assure you if you will do me this one more favor I will never forget your kindness to me and in the comeing future I shall hold myself under deep obligations untill it is fully reciprocated

Please enclosed the Secy. letter to me and I will place it on file with others received and comeing and hand them all in in order. Respty J. G. D. Pettijohn
