I Enlisted Last March for the term of 3 years, if not sooer Discharged I went to Kingston Georgia, and there I took the Fever and a short spell of that and from that I was put in the V.R.C. I Enlisted for the Field and would like to serve my time out there.  we do nothing here but stand guard and Drill.  we go on guard Every other Day we have Company drill Twice A Day.  Battalion Drills and &amp;amp; Desparade Also. and have About half rations.  Gov. I think that is rather hard on us.  I would rather go to the field and serve my 3 years from the Day I start there than  /  to serve my time out here and there is but one way to

I Enlisted Last March for the term of 3 years, if not sooer Discharged I went to Kingston Georgia, and there I took the Fever and a short spell of that and from that I was put in the V.R.C. I Enlisted for the Field and would like to serve my time out there.  we do nothing here but stand guard and Drill.  we go on guard Every other Day we have Company drill Twice A Day.  Battalion Drills and &amp;amp; Desparade Also. and have About half rations.  Gov. I think that is rather hard on us.  I would rather go to the field and serve my 3 years from the Day I start there than  /  to serve my time out here and there is but one way to

It would require several men probably.  I could furnish one to look after the Soldiers of this Dist

                    <text>&lt;p&gt;brother was in the 3 months service in Missouri and then in the 10th Ills Inf but he got sick and was discharged in the summer of 1862 and the other one enlisted in the 32 Ind Regt. his time is out now also enlisted my Brother in law in the 79 Ills Infantry. I the winter from 61-62 they made a company up for the 62 Ills Inf and Wilson the 2 Lieutenant came to me and told me I would get 66 Dollars backpay if I would enlist I would not have to stay any longer then six months and we would never leave the state my mother told me I should not go but he came daily till I went and so I got to be a soldier as a boy 15 years old. When we came to Camp Dubois Captain Overmire would not have me for a soldier but took me for his waiter I was never examined by the Doktor or musterd in like the rest but still he put my Name down
&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;hr /&gt;
&lt;p&gt;in the book and I drew my pay like a private soldier. I never had a musket I only stood guard one night in other mans place and I got the ague right away after that and had it as long as I was with the regiment On the 20 Dez. 62 I was taken prisoner at Holly Springs and was send to St Louis where I had the Lung fever once and once the measles that made me sick of the soldier life I left St Louis the 13 of April 63.
&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;It was not cowardice what made me desert but because I was sick all the time there was a young man 20 years of age in our Company at St Louis and he paid 50 Dollars and got free but they did not care anything for the dutchman whether he died or not! I can swear to all I said, that I went against my mothers will (and so forth) my Captains put me down as 18 years old but

&lt;hr /&gt;
&lt;p&gt;the fact is he never asked me how old I was and if you write to the regiment you will be told the same and I can swear to it that I did not understand one word what was said when I was sworn in. Now do give me free so I can go and see my relations and mother again it was only a youthfull fault and I do not think I ought to be punished for it all my life time for God Knows I did not Know where to go to when I enlisted. Once more I ask you to give me my discharge and receive the blessings of a mother so that she can say also:, My son was dead and is alive again he was dead and is found.

And sir did not feel that I was acting in the cause of humanity I would not thus trouble you upon this subject.  The facts are simply these.  on the 2d day of July - Jeremiah Ragan went to the house of one James Chancy abused said.  Chancy 's family in a very rediculous manner.  drew his pistol and attempted to shoot his (Chancy's) wife applying all kinds of ludicrous epithets

&lt;hr /&gt;
&lt;p&gt;to her and was only prevented from carrying his atrocious designs "into Execution by the timely interference of a friend" Said Ragan on the same Evening &amp;amp; the next morning made threats against the life of James Chancy "On Sunday morning Chancy &amp;amp; Ragan meet where &amp;amp; when an altercation Ensued which resulted in Chancy shooting Ragan,  He (Chancy) had a hearing before a "Copperhead" Court (viz. Judge Sloan) who refused to admit him to bail.  He is now laying in jail ironed &amp;amp; pinioned to the floor under the surveilence of a Copperhead jailor who neglects to furnish him with half rations and fresh water but once in three days.
&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Chancy's loyalty is undoubted
&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;hr /&gt;
&lt;p&gt;"he has ever been a quiet and peaceable Citizen has a large family three sons in the Union Army - he has ever been a strong supporter of the Administration and the Government.  On the the other hand Ragan was a pensioner upon the Government - from a slight wound received in the Early part of the rebelion, but notwithstanding this, all his associations were with the butternuts and those who delight most in abusing the Government, And after he worked himself out of the Army I have ever doubted his loyalty, nor does this doubt rest with me along.
&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Chancy's strongest, and I might almost say, his only persecutors are the butternuts.
&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Now Genl. what I am driving at is simply this, whether you could mete out the ends of justice both to Community and to Chancy by rescuing him from this "Copperheads Hell" or at least from the hands of this Copperhead "Cleak" and enlisting him in the army. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Letters were received on Saturday, stating that General Meredith, who has succeeded Gen. Paine at Paducah, Kenty,- in a speech delivered by him before the 134th Regt of Ills Volunteers (100 day men) now at Mayfield, Kenty, said "We should Keep that Regiment there to level the present Forts, build new ones, and teach them Discipline"
&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Several of the Parents &amp;amp; Friends of the young men (some of whom are minors) have call'd on me, and requested I would write to you stating facts-
&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;If their Col: (McChesney) now reported to be under arrest, has committed himself, the Regiment ought not to suffer for obeying orders, or his misconduct.
&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;They are volunteers, enlisted out of pure Patriotism, and their Time was out about the 4th Instant
&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;They wish to come Home and be muster'd out of the Service.
&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;A great portion of the men intend to Reinlist and receive the Bounty, but if they are badly &amp;amp; unjustly treated, they will undoubtedly change their mind,-
&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The Regiment is now placed in a peculiarly antagonistic position with the Sesesh &amp;amp; Rebels, in consequence of the severe measures adopted by General Paine &amp;amp; carried out by them, as ordered. 
&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I therefore address your Excellency and urge your interposition at Head Quarters to the effect that the 134th Regt of Ills Vols be immediately sent home and muster'd out of the Service

&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Letters were received on Saturday, stating that General Meredith, who has succeeded Gen. Paine at Paducah, Kenty,- in a speech delivered by him before the 134th Regt of Ills Volunteers (100 day men) now at Mayfield, Kenty, said "We should Keep that Regiment there to level the present Forts, build new ones, and teach them Discipline"
&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Several of the Parents &amp;amp; Friends of the young men (some of whom are minors) have call'd on me, and requested I would write to you stating facts-
&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;If their Col: (McChesney) now reported to be under arrest, has committed himself, the Regiment ought not to suffer for obeying orders, or his misconduct.
&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;They are volunteers, enlisted out of pure Patriotism, and their Time was out about the 4th Instant
&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;They wish to come Home and be muster'd out of the Service.
&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;A great portion of the men intend to Reinlist and receive the Bounty, but if they are badly &amp;amp; unjustly treated, they will undoubtedly change their mind,-
&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The Regiment is now placed in a peculiarly antagonistic position with the Sesesh &amp;amp; Rebels, in consequence of the severe measures adopted by General Paine &amp;amp; carried out by them, as ordered. 
&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I therefore address your Excellency and urge your interposition at Head Quarters to the effect that the 134th Regt of Ills Vols be immediately sent home and muster'd out of the Service

&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I avail myself of this early opportunity to ask your Excellency's interposition in getting authority from the Secretary of War, to raise a command in this State for service in the field.  I have numerous offers of men, both Veterans mustered out of Service and Citizens who desire to go in a command under me.

&lt;p&gt;I can raise in a very short period of time a regiment of Soldiers who have served 3 years and over and by Connecting with them &lt;u&gt;citizens&lt;/u&gt; three or four Regiments.
