B Robinson, Confederate prisoner, I have to say; that I received him from his captor, - whom I directed to return to his duty against the rebels. - and took him to my residence , where he was guarded & cared for during the day. At night Lt. Billings [came?] by order of Lt. Col. Ranch, commanding the 137th Reg. Ill. Vol. to take the prisoner to more appropriate quarters. Lt. Billings inquired at once for weapons & personal effects of the prisoner; [expressing ?] himself as inexperienced in those [duties?], but supposed he was to examine & turn over to the government whatever he found of value. (He was acting Regt Q.M.) He took thirty six (36) dollars in Kentucky & Tennessee currency <hr /> and a quantity of "Confederate" paper, the amount of which I cannot state, not regarding it of value. Also a watch, inferior in appearance. In this transaction I did not regard it as my duty to interfere; but on reflection, & at the request of Mr. Robinson, I called on Lt Billings , to say that I thought he had [transcinded?] his duty, & to urge a return of the property. He said he had "turned over the money to the Quarter Master." I did not learn whom, but supposed he referred to the appropriate Q.M. of this Post. The watch he had retained, "as a memento," not for its value, which was regarded by himself & the Q.M. as very little & of no particular use to the Government and in no sense as part compensation for his own very considerable losses by the raid. Illinois State Agency Nashville Tenn Sept 27th 1864 Hon Richard Yates Governor Dr Sir Dr Merrick surgeon in charge of the transportation of sick & wounded from the front to Louisville, has just called on me to know what is being done toward getting our men home before 4th Nov. He says Gov Morton has succeeded in procuring an order from the secretary of War for all Indiana troops unfit for service to be sent home, and the Indiana Agents are urging him to secure transportation; but he will do nothing about it untill he hears from you. The Doctor says "he is very anxious to beat his old Neighbors the Copperhead candidate for Govenor & carry the State for Lincoln." I am a citizen of this State and have been for eleven years. on the 2nd of last month I hired as carpenter in the Quartermasters Dep't. at St. Louis for six months unless sooner discharged I was sent with others to little Rock Ark. and on account of Ill. health was discharged on the 10th <hr /> of the present month after recieving my discharge it was neccesary to obtain a pass to return home and to obtain a pass I was obliged to be enrolled in the malitia of that State (Ark) then I had to obtain a furlow and the best I could do was a furlo for 30 days from the 10th of Aug. 1864 Now the question is am I obliged to return and go into the Malitia of that or any other State except old Illinois. Lagergren Co B. 72d Ills We complain that he is held at Camp Butler, not permited to go to his Regt at Vicksburg, and acordingly his pay withheld. He enlisted last Feb & left a Famely dependant entirely upon his $13.00 pr Month for subsistance. He is a Sweed & could not talk much when he left. Was quite sick when his Co was sent down to Dixe - but soon recovered. The last heard he was very despondent & said he could not live long without some knowledge of his future condition. The Famely are suffering & dependant on Freinds, & City help. please have proper <hr /> inquiry instituted in his case & if possible send the famely part of this small pittance so long retained. I believe he was recruited by Lieut Jos W. Jamison certainly something is wrong, & should be attended to. Either the Govt is being Swindled out of the use of Soldier, or this man Lagergren and family are made to suffer very unnecessarily.
