I am a citizen of this State and have been for eleven years. on the 2nd of last month I hired as carpenter in the Quartermasters Dep't. at St. Louis for six months unless sooner discharged I was sent with others to little Rock Ark. and on account of Ill. health was discharged on the 10th

of the present month after recieving my discharge it was neccesary to obtain a pass to return home and to obtain a pass I was obliged to be enrolled in the malitia of that State (Ark) then I had to obtain a furlow and the best I could do was a furlo for 30 days from the 10th of Aug. 1864

Now the question is am I obliged to return and go into the Malitia of that or any other State except old Illinois. I am not the only one in the same fix from Ill. and we would like very much to have the discision of our Gov. and know what to do

We cannot see why we are beholden to that State for anything

He wants to know if he must go back there to serve in their Militia.

There is a question that I would very much like to have decided as I am the one conserned The circumstances are these.

I have the honor to be your obt servant,

He hired as a carpenter on 2nd of Aug. and was sent to Little Rock, and was discharged on 10th inst. on account of ill-health, and when he applied for a pass to come home he had to enroll himself in the Militia of that state and then only could get a furlough for 30 days. He wants to know if he must go back there to serve in their Militia.

Dear Sir:

Tho' not personally acquainted with you, I had the honor of voting to elevate you to the position you now occupy. You were, I presume, acquainted with L. Jay S. Dr. J. J. R. Turney recently a delegate to the "Chicago Convention" & "Springfield Convention". Now, my bro L. Jay S. is "all night on the goose", but I lament to confess, Daddy & the Dr. are on the Cop side!

Well, I am ready to serve my Country in any capacity, but like many others would like a position! If my Governor

has any honorable place to appoint me to, I am at his services. I preach sometimes, (and I preach the Anti-Slavery Methodism) and could act as Chaplain, if there should be an opening. I am a tolerable Clerk, & could accept a position as such.

Now, I have no claims, farther than any other Loyal man Governor, but will say that, I should be pleased to be employed in some position.

Very Respectfully

Gov R. Yates:

Dear Sir:

Tho' not personally acquainted with you, I had the honor of voting to elevate you to the position you now occupy. You were, I presume, acquainted with L. Jay S. Turney, (my brother) recently Sec. of Washington Terr: & probably with my Father - Dr. Daniel Turney who has several times represented Wayne Co. in the State Legislature and also with my Bro. Dr. J. J.

Your Obt. Servt.

Fayette Turney

Gov. R. Yates.

Answer him fully & also how Chaplains are apptd - if he can find a vacancy &c

Finney, Fayette.

Fairfield Ills. Sept 26th 64

Asks for some position by which he can serve his country. He preaches sometimes (Anti-Slavery Methodism) and would accept position of Chaplain.
