The Doctor says "he is very anxious to beat his old Neighbors the Copperhead candidate for Govenor & carry the State for Lincoln." He enlisted last Feb & left a Famely dependant entirely upon his $13.00 pr Month for subsistance. He is a Sweed & could not talk much when he left. Was quite sick when his Co was sent down to Dixe - but soon recovered. The last heard he was very despondent & said he could not live long without some knowledge of his future condition. The Famely are suffering & dependant on Freinds, & City help. please have proper <hr /> inquiry instituted in his case & if possible send the famely part of this small pittance so long retained. I believe he was recruited by Lieut Jos W. Jamison certainly something is wrong, & should be attended to. Either the Govt is being Swindled out of the use of Soldier, or this man Lagergren and family are made to suffer very unnecessarily. Will you please inform me as soon as possible whether you have received the same or not---and if you have received the same what dispsition has been made of the matter and oblige. State of Georgia Camp Atlanta Sept the 23rd 1864 Mr yates dear Sir I seat my self to take the privalidge of droping a line to ask your forgiveness for some of my bad conduct Since I have belonged to the army I went home without leave partly Some of my oficers Said if it was them they would go home and a good many of my friendes at home was riting for me to come home and I taken there advice and went home but I dident feel rite while I was going home and After I got home some blamed me and others Said I done rite but I dident <hr /> feel rite about it and I went to the provose Marshal and told him the circumstance I was very porely I had the rheumaticks pains in my limbes so bad I could scarcely walk and he gave me a furlow to stay at home a bout six months and I got beter and came back to my comand and they tell me I will have my time to make up and I ask forgiveness of you if it lies in your power to forgive me I have done my duty as nigh as I knowed how ever since I came back I have went threw the campaign that has taken atlanta and if you feel you can do any thing for a private soldier It wood be mity <hr /> thankfuly received and if you wish any information while I was absent rite to Mr. Loony of vieanna of Johnson Co Ills and he will give you and if you wish any information since I returned to my comand direct to lieutenant Colonel of the of the 110th batalion and he will give it to you so if you can do me any good I shal be mity thankfuly receave of a private who is and who has fought for the rightes of our union and constitution and the laws there of and for the flag that our fore fathers fought for and I left a wife and four litle babes and one has died since I left them <hr /> and pore old widow mother and four litle felows ther for her to take care of and me in the army well what they are to do god only nows for the want of my attention and I belong to the Freemasons of the state Ills lodge No 89 in marion williamso Co and you can govern your self acordingly I ask these favors of you hoping you will grant them if in your power to do so for a private soldier so I leave the question with you hoping to hear from you soon Yours with respect James M.
