George Smith who served his time in the Penitentiary and was discharged between two and three years since wishes me to ask of you if it is possible for him to be restored to his citizenship. He says the warden at Joliett will certify to his good conduct. Since his return here he has been a good, and law abiding citizen. He wants to vote this fall if he can do so honorably. He is a good union man.

If he can be so fortunate as to receive the Governors executive clemency have the kindness to inform him what steps are necessary.

Your reply of the 30th of August said that you had "written to the U. S. Medical Director at Nashville Tenn requesting that an order issue directing Andrew Golden to report to U. S. Hospital Chicago Ill"

The Soldier reported at Chicago but would not be received because he had no transfer, As soon as he can get that he will be allowed to report at the above place. I wish you would have the kindness to reply as soon as possible stating what action if any has been taken in the matter. If there is any thing further that can be done to effect this transfer I hope you will aid me. The Soldier is unable to travel such a long distance, He is home and friends are here & it would be much better for him & better for the Governance if he could be allowed to remain near here until he recovers. I have been expecting to hear from you again from day to day.

Hon Richard Yates

Dr Sir

Some time since I wrote to you in regard to the transfer of one Andrew Golden, corporal in Co E 89th Regt Ill Vol. from the Hospital at Nashville to the Hospital in Chicago.

I am very Respy

Your obet Servant

It was at once suggested to me that I could get the appointment of "Supervising Special Agent" at that place if I would make the effort. I am this morning informed that there are others applying for it. If you are not committed in favor of some one - and should deem me worthy of the trust I should be glad to have your aid in the matter. If however there be the smallest object in he way of your aid - I hope you will candidly inform me. I trust to see if you soon

I have this day telegraphed to Louisville to order Major F. Hays, if not actually in the field paying troops, to repair to Springfield as you have requested. Major Cumback has also been telegraphed, to authorize twenty days leave of absence to Major McClaughey, if he can be spared from his duties at Springfield. If his duties are therefore not at this moment pressing, you will be good enough to say that absence from Springfield for that time will not be objected to from this office.
