Hon Richard Yates

Dear Sir,

I regret deeply that you passed through our city so rapidly that I had not the opportunity of seeing you. I hold in my hands, six letters of request for the promotion of my son Col. George B. Hoge to a Brigadiership. These letters are from Gen A. L. Chitlain, his superior officer to the President, whose friend he is - from Col. Turner 108th Ill. Inf. to Hon. E. C. Ingersoll, from Lieut Col. Lackland 108th Ill. Inf. to Hon. E. C. Ingersoll; from Lieut Col. George Clark 113th. Ill. Inf. to Hon. I. N. Arnold; from Spencer Floyd, Lieut Col. 120th. Ill. to Hon. James H. Lane; from Capt. J. Woodruff 113th Ill. to his cousin Joel Gurley, Wash. City.

These letters are written by men who have been in his Brigade & know him well & are written to the personal friends of the writers, and avowed friends of my son.----

I will briefly enumerate the claims they advance. My son's long & arduous service from the beginning of the war always being on duty, unless disabled by sickness or wounds & his having made great business sacrifices to enter the service, his good moral character, his skill & bravery as an officer, his four severe wounds, two nearly fatal, his steady & faithful support of the Administration, his successful efforts to bring his Regiment up to vote, thereby securing the election of Kuykendall, the highly ammendatory report of Gen. R. B. Marcy, Inspector Gen U.S.A of First Brig - Dist. Memphis, commanded by my son - he having been acting Brig - almost, if not quite 18 months. I have good reasons to believe that Gen. Farnsworth, Hon. E. B. Washburn, Senater Trumbull, Hon Jesse [Morten ?] & John Wilson 3rd Auditor would act with you, in a request for his promotion. I feel entirely sure, if you will give it some personal attention, the matter will be secured. By so doing, you will lay me if possible ----

under stronger personal obligations than before should you be willing to use your influence in my son's favor & will telegraph me to my P. O. box 947 Chicago. I will forward to you at once the letters by mail. I am not willing to trouble you with them, without your permission.

Our approaching Fair increases in magnificent proportions daily. Our prominent business & professional men manifest more zeal & appear willing to give the great & holy cause as much time as they give to their own private interests. The country is becoming thoroughly aroused & will be systematically organized. This great Northwestern Fair will undoubtedly do honor to the noble states you have so long & so nobly represented as our Ex Governor & honorable Senator. We are proud to number you among our Vice Presidents.

I hope to be in Wash. about the middle of Feb. on business connected with this Fair which we hope will be the closing of the magnificent series of Jan. Fairs, originated by the women of the prairies. It would be a joyful welcome to me if I could find my son's well earned promotion secured. Your former goodness & my faith in you must be my apology for this intrusion.

Your sincere friend

Mr. A. H. Hoge ----

Please send the letter to me and I will present it with other papers when I have the matter before the President I should like to have it as soon as possible address me at Washington D C

Dear Sir

I addressed you a letter some two weeks since in which I referred you to a letter to Gov Oglesby which I wrote and which the friends of the cause had printed in pamphlet form I have received no reply but I am confident my opinions therein expressed meet your approval The delegation as well as myself rejoice at your election and it is quite possible I may be here when you arrive I think the senators and at least one of the representatives Bongano will be admitted I am recommended by the entire delegation of the office of the Surveyor of the Port of New Orleans They will personally sign my appointment and I think there can be little doubt of my success I desire however a letter from you a (----) personal letter to Mr Lincoln stating of what service I have been to the cause during the late campaign in Illinois I desire this not so much to influence Mr Lincoln or Mr [name?] in making the appointment as to put myself properly before Mr Lincoln I presented to him a letter from Hon L J [name?] but I do desire nothing of that kind now as our representatives her from Louisiana and some of them at least old personal intimate friends of mine

Please send the letter to me and I will present it with other papers when I have the matter before the President I should like to have it as soon as possible address me at Washington D C

                    <text>
With copy of letter to Colonel Capron from George Stoneman 1/23/65

Horace Capron
Raised his cavalry regiment in Illinois in 1862 at a period the most difficult for recruiting. The formation of his regiment was commenced as the 18th Illinois but went into service as the 14th. All the attempts at organization of the Regiments under the intermediate numbers having failed though authorized six months previous to General Capron's earliest efforts. In the fields he commanded his 1st Brigade under General Judoh in pursuit of John Morgan, was 26 days in the saddle, at the battle of Buffington Islands, and at Morgan's capture and was one of the field officers who accompanied General Shackelford to Cincinnati to deliver the prisoners to General Burnsides. (see Burnside's and Shackleford's Reports) Went into Knoxville Tennessee with the advanced guards of General Burnside's Army, and the first Federal picket for that city. Served through the whole campaign, participating in nearly every battle,

and at its close, was ordered back to Kentucky to remount and re-arm several Regiments. On General Stoneman being ordered to the front General Capron was left in command of the forces, and on completing his reorganization joined General Sherman's command near Chattanooga where he was complimented for the fine appearance of his men after so long a march. Went immediately into active service with the army of General Sherman and served through the campaign in all the battles to the taking of Atlanta where General Capron furnished the advanced guards of the 20th Corps from his old regiment, driving the enemy's cavalry through the city. (see General Ward's Report) Was selected by General Stoneman to command a Brigade called "Capron's Brigade" in his famous raid through Georgia. Was with General Stoneman at his capture, but with about 300 men General Capron cut through the enemies lines being closely pressed for six days succeeded in reaching the Federal lines at Marietta Georgia

when he was complimented in a dispatch from General Sherman upon his safe arrival through so many difficulties and dangers, he was then ordered back to Kentucky with five Regiments to remount and re-arm but had scarcely reached there when he was ordered to report to General Thomas at Nashville, and was sent by General Schofield to Wainesborough to cover the right of Columbia (see Thomas' Report and Report of Secretary of War) Met Hood's advanced guard at that place. skirmishes and slowly fell back before the enemy. holding him in check for two nights and one day to allow General Schofield's time to fall back from Pulaski on Columbia and was driven into that place followed closely by the enemy. meeting General Schofield's advanced guards coming through the city on double quick to form line of battle.(see Schofield's Report). Was injured in a night charge at the battle before Franklin and after the relief of Nashville resigned on Surgeons Certificate of disability from that injury being then unfit for service.

General Capron had three sons who entered the service at the opening of the War. The eldest was killed at the head of his command in the charge upon the enemy after having received a medal of honor with the most honorable mention, and been once promoted for his gallantry. The second son was made prisoner and taken to Charleston, South Carolina. Neither of the surviving sons has yet recovered from the effects of exposure and hardship on the field and in rebel prisons

                <text>

Dear Sir;

I wrote to you to obtain, if possible, the permission to J. J. Green, to take the oath of allegiance. This I suppose will be done, if the attention of Mr. Stanton or Lincoln can be called to it. If not, get them to bond him to me, and I will be responsible for his parole, and deliver him up to the government if he shows any disposition to do otherwise than sit down quietly and read law, in Illinois. I will not let him go to Kentucky at all, without the consent of government.

I saw W. Pitt Kellogg today. He says he knows William Kellogg will not go to [Guatemala?] but will return to Peoria. This being so you will confer a special favor on me by applying to Mr. Lincoln and Mr. Seward and get that appointment that of minister resident for me.

When I was in Washington last, Mr. Lincoln seemed quite willing for me to have it, had it not been promised to Kellogg. Now since he will not have it, I suppose I can get it, provided Mr. Seward shall not be in the way.

Yours in haste, C. Ballance

Dear Sir;

Ballance

Col. G. P. Smith of Jacksonville is an applicant for the office of Collector of Customs at Port Townsend in Washington Territory.

                    <text>
Mt. Morris, Illinois
January 1865
Gov. Yates
My dear friend,
On my return home after a short absence, I found your kind note of Dec. 27th inviting me to be present at the opening of the Session of our Legislature to help you on the Senatorial question. The result of the contest forbids, on my part, the expression of any regret at my unavoidable absence. While I do not suppose that I could have rendered you any essential service had I been present, I may be allowed to say, that I never wavered for one moment in my firm persuasion that our Illinois Union Legislature could do anything less than [thus?] reward you for your unceasing devotion to the truest and best interest of the Government, and your constant and untiring care and concern for the interest & wellbeing, in every regard, of our brave boys in the field.

Well, the battle is fought, and the victory won, and you have no friend in or out of the State, who can, or will more heartily and sincerely congratulate you upon the result than myself. Now my dear friend, allow me, so far to presume upon our long acquaintance, and my position in society, as well also as the fact, that you have no truer, sincerer friend in the state, to say that I am ---- not unapprised of the one sole objection which was urged against your election. Now let me ask, but for this sole objection, who would have had the temerity to enter the list against you? But for the fact, that through the kindness of your heart you have rendered yourself, to some extent at least, obnoxious to the charge, you could have proudly and most triumphantly by loud acclaim reached that high, important and dignified position, one which your abilities and patriotism qualify you so well to fill with honor to yourself & great benefit to that country you love so well. Now I say, that your future is just what you may make it. There is no man in this Government whose future will be more bright, brilliant and glorious than yours, my dear friend, if you will allow it to be so. I but express the honest convictions of many of your friends that there is but a single reason why you might not one day, and that day not so very far distant, fill that high place at present so well filled by our old friend A. Lincoln. No one man in the Government to day has any stronger hold upon the confidence - the warm esteem and affection of the people than you have, apart from the draw back to which we have alluded.

Now my dear friend, in view of the claim which your country has upon you - that country which you love better than life - in view of the claims your friends----have upon you, and the deep interest they feel in you - in view of all the close and precious relations of private, social, and domestic wellbeing, and in view of the high, solemn and commanding claim which God has upon you, resolve, in the strength of divine grace, that you fully, finally and forever renounce a habit, which you so well know will assuredly work, and speedily work the utter ruin, wreck and overthrow of all our bright hopes and prospects for the future in reference to you.

Now, there is not another public man in the State to whom I would thus address myself, because there is no other man for whom I feel the same interest. There is no other man in the State of the same promise of high distinction and position, prospectively, unless you yourself dash the cup from your lips.

My dear friend, I, above all things desire to see you completely recovered from this one fault. I do not by any means believe the stories of your enemies, still you will allow me, as an old and sincere friend to say, that in view of your position and in view of what is simply true, it is your most sacred duty in the strength of grace divine, to abstain wholly and absolutely from any & everything that will intoxicate. Here and here alone is sure footing - solid rock, while all is sea beside. Oh I beseech you to make and keep this resolve and disappoint your enemies and bless your friends and live to serve and bless your country. These few----words of kind admonition & friendly warning are from a true friend, one who has always been your fast friend for many years. I labored hard for your nomination for Governor - labored for your election - supported your administration throughout. I have never regretted it. Had I been in the Legislature I would have supported you in preference to any and all other men, then I am sure you will receive these lines kindly, at least. May God bless you my dear friend, and guide, protect, and bless and save you, will ever be the prayer of

Your friend truly
Francis A. McNeill----

                <text>

Francis A. McNeill----

Dear Sir

Doctor W S. Wright a cousin of mine joined the Rebel Army in 1861. Went South leaving his child a little boy in Jackson Co Mo. In the winter of 62-3 that County was devastated. The fiercest and most deadly conflicts occurred there. Dr W advised of this came to St Louis Feby 63 to recover his boy- He was captured-then-and has now been for nearly 2 years confined in prison.

His offense of coming into our lines is a gross one - but what Father will fail to appreciate the motive that prompted him to come- I have assurances

on which I rely implicitly that he has in sentiment and feeling wholly and unequivocally abandoned the Rebellion and [repented?] his false step.

Upon this state of fact I respectfully request that you see President Lincoln and request his release.

The Confederacy is falling to pieces - our flag is everywhere victorious- Mr Lincoln Can afford to be generous

Here with I enclose letter from Maj Gen Prentiss and one from Brig Genl Copeland officers in Charge of Alton Prison

If upon the case as presented you make full [illegible] in aiding in Securing the release of Dr Wright I shall be gratified. and he will

Dear Sir

If upon the case as presented you make full [illegible] in aiding in Securing the release of Dr Wright I shall be gratified. and he will

long remember and highly appreciate your Kindness

I have the honor to be Sir Respectfully
Truly Yours
