In the fields he commanded his 1st Brigade under General Judoh in pursuit of John Morgan, was 26 days in the saddle, at the battle of Buffington Islands, and at Morgan's capture and was one of the field officers who accompanied General Shackelford to Cincinnati to deliver the prisoners to General Burnsides. And during the whole time of my service to the present time have always done my duty And been along with the battery in every engage ment and Campaign it has gone through since it first was organized. I suffer a great deal. Others under the same circumstances or for less cause would either go to some Hospital or be transferred to the invalid Corps but as I do not wish to do either, I would humbly ask your honor to have me transferred to some Seagoing man of war. For I think that if i got on salt water again I would regain my usual strenght which I had before I come in the army, and of which I now for a long time have feeled the loss of. I am a native of Sweeden and have been for a long time on the Sea before. So I am not ignorant of the work to be done there. I am out of business at this particular time, or at least not a sufficient to justify me to lay still, and being informed that I could get a situation, as Surgeon in Some one of the General Hospitals, if I would accept. I at once came to the conclusion, I would write you for your aid and assistance in this matter. I would like very much to be located, if convenient at Memphis Tenn: in charge of one those Hospitals. My experience in Hospital Treatment for the last twelve years in the City of San Francisco, Cal'a has been extensive, and for Reccommendation I can give the following Gentlemen, Drs [C.?] M. Farnsworth, Hon. E. B. Washburn, Senater Trumbull, Hon Jesse [Morten ?] & John Wilson 3rd Auditor would act with you, in a request for his promotion. I feel entirely sure, if you will give it some personal attention, the matter will be secured. By so doing, you will lay me if possible ---- under stronger personal obligations than before should you be willing to use your influence in my son's favor & will telegraph me to my P.
