Dear Sir

At the risk of wearing out even your patience, I take the liberty of asking one more kindness from you---only one, the last of all.

It is this. That if you see no objection (there may be some that I am not acquainted with) you will request President Lincoln to issue an order to the Reviewing Authorities of the Deptment of the Ohio, that they shall, in case their decision is adverse to my husband, send the Record to him, and stay proceedings until further orders.

The President knows about the case from Judge Norton---our personal friend as well as Representative, and promised Judge Norton "most cheerfully" before the adjournment of Congress, that he would take this very action if necessary. The Record has now been in the hands of the reviewing Authorities about ten days. Judge Norton is about writing to claim the fulfillment of the President's promise, and what I am anxious for, is, your endorsement also, of the request. I have so often

trespassed upon you, that I will not prolong this letter, except to say how I am, always,

Very gratefully Yours,

Sarah E. Henshaw

The Battery boys were getting up another petition to you, and had it nearly ready to send. It contained the Hundred and Twenty names. For safety, they deposited it with the Post Quarter-master. In his absence, the First Lieut of the Battery obtained access to his Office, ransacked the papers, and found and copied this petition, designing to Court Martial or imprison all who had signed it, but found that it included nearly every member of the Battery. The Post Quarter-master is now about preferring charges against the First Lieut (Putnam) on this account and others. A letter came last evening to our County Treasurer, giving this information. O my dear Governor! Those boys cannot make their earnest views reach you, but I know you will lift up yours in their behalf, all the more strongly because they are so [environned?], and so helpless.

Governor Yates

Your Kind letter of the 5th inst. is received, and I thank you sincerely for it. The interest thus manifested in my behalf, as well as the friendship you have ever shown me is very gratified to my feelings.

I have mingled so little with the people Since I came home, that I really cannot give an intelligent Answer, as to the political prospects in this section. From conversations, however, with friends in this county, I should say every thing is hopeful here, and that the prospects are very good for Mr. Lincoln, and the Union State ticket.

I suppose this Representative District is doubtful, and Unless Stark County can again overbalance the Democratic Majority of Peoria County Democratic Members will if course be Elected. The Peoria Men have never worked as they ought to have done. there has not been that Unity of purpose and Action Among them, necessary to success. They have relied upon Stark County to carry them through, and she has usually done it. And latterly Some of them have been abusing better Men than themselves, And those who have Contributed quite as Much to the general Success in the District, if not a great deal more than they Ever did or Could. COMMISSIONERS OFFICE
Joliet July 14th 1864

Dear Governor

Yours enclosing photographs was received yesterday, for which accept my thanks.

I never yet asked you to do anything that I did not beleive was clearly right. and so far I beleive has resulted for good. In this Joslyn matter, I but reflected the public opinion of Kane County, And I do assure you, that I have had a great deal of trouble in satisfying the community in the commissioning him for any office in the Regt.

Now I cannot be charged with having any personal preferences for Col Bronson, for I never have seen him in my life. I only felt with Hundreds of others that Joslyn was entirely unfit to have charge of a Regiment.

That he was an unmitigated Copperhead and had been disgracefully dismissed from the 36th Regt of Ills; Vols; for which see Genl Fullers report. I can readily understand why the men you mention were so strong for him Genl Fuller is under obligations to the Joslyn family, and all of his friends of course came to the rescue. But public opinion sustains you in thus gallantly refusing to make him Col.

Now in relation to the other portion of your letter in regard to the Senatorship, Now I have never yet been truthfully charged with deserting my friends

And in your case it would be the largest ingratitude on my part. You are entitled from me all of my efforts and influence to place you in that position. And God knows it will be cheerfully given. The Senator from my District Mr Allen is right all the time the members from Kane Kendall, DeKalb & Dupage will be of my stripe

I shall try and be in Springfield before long when I trust that all will be well. The month of August is a trying one upon me. I have every year during the month of August what is termed Hay Fever or Hay Asthma, which confines me to the house for four or five weeks. As soon as this is over, will come down. Do not fear that I shall leave a thing undone that is in my power to do in your case, for it is a work of esteem and respect on my part.

Truly yours &

Ira A W Buck

Hon Richard Yates

             Springfield Ills.
Dear Sir. Your favour of the 9th is just rec'd - I did not show your letters to our good friend Tomlin for reasons which, I hope, will be satisfactory to you;- I feared that he would desire the position of State Agt and I Knew him to be unfit for it;- Mr T. is a very good and honest man, as you probably Know, but he is troubled with a Kind of masterly inactivity -- what some uncharitable folk call laziness which destroys his usefulness to a very great extent: I therefore took the liberty of acting on my own responsibility in suggesting Mr. Huntington, who in addition to his other good qualities is a warm friend of yours.- Like myself he entertains the idea that your Message of Jan 5. 63 to the Assembly is one of the best documents of the kind ever gotten (illegible).

its to the suggestion of yours that Washburn was another hack. I suppose you have more accurate means of inform=ation than myself, but unless you have, it is a mistake:- for one to even entertain any such idea that I can learn:- On the contrary - (illegible) (his fidus Achates) told me a month or so ago Hon W. wished to return as Representative of this District. Very few persons entertain any feeling of personal friendship for Washburn- he has not the first element of character which awakens that sentiment so far as I know and I have as good opportunities of knowing as anyone

and Il consider that a bar to his prospects for the Senatorship. His advocacy of Grants interests & his successful career as a Legislator of the Congress just past may have given him hopes in the direction of the Senatorship - but I think he will hardly be guilty of the same folly which destroyed Aldrich in Minnesota and Carl Washburn in Wisconsin- both declined renomination as Represen=tation with the expectation of getting the Senatorship- and instead - got - (illegible)- E.B. is shrewd enough to forfeit by an example so near home; The Chicago Tribune of the 13th saw that Hon EB Washburn was enthusiastically wel=come home on last Friday by his friends at Galena"- the facts being - that not a soul in town Knew of his return until he had been here the better part of a day - and then there was not the slightest demonstration;- I may say in this conv=sation that I am on friendly terms with Mr. W. & now asked or wanted a favour at his hands which he did not grant- I say that lest you may think me somewhat severe on him from anger at some slight- Not so: I and only a constitutionally opposed to all Kinds of humbug and he has always impressed me with the consideration that his external manifestations of regards weve the cloak of opinion from selfishness & working less;- Nevertheless I did my utmost to secure this County for him at his last election and there are some here who believe that I did it in As Pres of the County Council. U.L of A & (succesevily?) the Presidents of the Galena ULA untill I got that job, I was not there and am not now without some influence. Our U.L.A is a power here now numbering about 1700 numbers in the county. about 500 of which are in Galena

The Galena people will give you a rousing reception at any time that you will come. advise us when you will be here & we will give you a mass meeting - I give you below the names of several Gentlemen who will do what they can for you - Of one thing you may be assured, we shall require our Candidate - to declare himself for "Lincoln Oglesby & Yates and we shall send either Henry Green or John D Platt - the former of Elizabeth in the County - the latter of Warren -

I shall of course consider yr letters entirely confidential -

                                                                    Yours (truly?) Edwd A. Small

Did not show Your letter to friend Tomlin for the reason that I think he is a candidate for State Adgt & he don't think (?) fit for it on account of Laziness he dont think Washburn is on the track. At any rate he has few friends there. Gives list of good union men.

Small

I am greatly obliged for the photograph-

Did not show Your letter to friend Tomlin for the reason that I think he is a candidate for State Adgt & he don't think (?) fit for it on account of Laziness he dont think Washburn is on the track. At any rate he has few friends there. Gives list of good union men.

Gov Richd Yates

Dear Sir

Your letter of the 16th inst came to hand yesterday. The idea comes into my mind that you may possibly have confounded me with my brother Col John Thomas who has twice been a member of the Legislature and was lately a delegate to the Baltimore Convention. I have however been Clerk of the Circuit Court for the last twelve years and of course must have some friends or I could not have held that office in this County for so long a time and with largely increased majorities at each election. My brother and myself are however a unit in political sentiments - both being of the ultra radical stamp. I hope you will not consider the foregoing egotistical The explanation is given simply because it is a fact and we wish to preserve our individual identity and that our friends may known - which is which

I have carefully reflected upon the very important suggestions contained in your letter and am prepared to answer them by giving you some facts and my opinion It is true that the diversion in favor of Fremont amongst the Germans here is very considerable but it has not yet taken permanent shape or organization and we are trying to prevent any organization of that kind. But our remedy is

not denunciation but kindness and conciliation and such little articles as the enclosed which I wrote and had translated and had published in the German paper yesterday as well as in the English this morning and I am told that it is having (as insignificant an article as it is) a very soothing effect upon them they believing it to have been written in a spirit of kindness and patriotism. Myself in conjunction with others have been for the last year concentrating to the best of our ability public sentiment in our County in favor of Dick Yates for U S Senator and as a result I can say that I believe that almost every Fremonter in our County as well as other radicals are for you for that position

We believe the Fremonters will vote with us for our Representatives - but we have fears about being able to get them on to the nominee for Senator Mr Metcalf Like many other men Metcalf said some very foolish things about the Germans some years ago which they remember and I believe that nothing unless it is their desire for your success will get them on to him - and you will have to give us your personal aid in this work The Germans at Highland in Madison County are ditto I know from having been there expressly to ascertain their views. They are also generally for Fremont at Highland

We have been thinking about a ratification meeting but have nearly concluded not to have it until after the Chicago Convention - believing that the

Hon Richd Yates

Gov Ills.

My Dear Sir

Your esteemed favor of the present month enclosing photographs is received. Please accept the thanks of myself and family.

I am gratefull to you for the kind feelings expressed in your letter. I am home only from a sense of duty to my loved ones and creditors. I bring with me a conciousness that while in the army I served the country honestly and faithfully. Misfortunes in business have pressed hard upon me since 1857 and I am anxious to so arrange my affairs now as to again offer my services to the country I love. My health is considerable impaired but I think I can yet endure active duty.

I learned before leaving the army that you would probably be sent to the senate. I need not assure you that it will give me great pleasure to aid you all in my power thus serving our noble cause. We need in our congress - especially at this time true and tried men - Men of real worth - Men who dare do right. Men who embracing the truth

dare declare the same whether it be popular or not. We want leaders - for servants of the people - Men of thought & action.

When a "Whig boy" I read your speeches and have watched you with increasing interest since. I regard you as a fearless champion of truth & liberty - as such I support you.

I need scarcely tell you that I have been greatly disgusted with our present congress. There has been a want of honest action & of determined effort. There has been but a slight exhibition of that lofty patriotism which in an hour of trial like the present, overlooks self and sacrifices all personal interests for the good of the nation. In this time of peril we need men who care little for present honor but who seizing the great events of the hour control them under the Providence of God, to the permanent good of the country & to the blessing of the world. Men who shall act - not for self alone, but for generations yet unborn.

Cotton I believe it is who says - "He who can only control circumstances, must yield to him who can both make and control."

O how I have longed to see in our congress a brave, fearless man with moral courage to proclaim the truth and to lead the way in rescueing our country and saving our fair heritage. I tell you if we had

have been blessed with proper legislation or with no legislation at all - this rebellion would have been crushed long ere this. And now after three years of toil & sacrifice - it is not in the power of the government to replenish its wasted armies readily owing to the acts of our legislators. I pray God may impart unto us a nation nerve & moral courage to rise above the circumstances that surround us and meet like men the Responsibilities of the hour.

I shall cheerfully & earnestly support you for the Senate. If I should not return to the army, it is my intention to speak in every township of this County during the fall.

Among your warm friends here is Mr Petrie - my father in law. Also Hon J C Gale. Let me suggest that you place little reliance upon the professions res collectors in this Congressional District.

Please advise me from time to time of your wishes and believe me Gov

Respectfully your friend & Obt Svt

Dear Governor

Yours of 18th is received. I understand that Either Church or Brown will be the Representative from Winnebago. (Illegible)

Lathrop to run as he is decidedly the ablest man. Either of them will go for you, and in fact I think that if they go into caucus there

will be no question of your nomination. I do not understand Lansing's evolutions. He is after something what I do not know, but I

November.

Sherman's movement so far has been capitally done and he now has the ability to throw a column suddenly (near?) Augusta and

destroy their Arsenal. I think he will if his cavalry is not already too far scattered. I consider his now the main line of attack and

much are as yet not in any way of decisive importance nor do I think they will be. I do not anticipate much from him before

September.

The authorities seem to have forgotten me and I do not think it worth while to wake them up just now.

The only consistently honorable course is to reinstate me in my own command & then if they don't want me there send me

A few letters from him would make your election "a sure thing"---this idea, which just occurred to me while writing, I throw out for consideration. I will write you again soon.

Yours Truly

Having sold my interest at Joliet I am once more at home and out of business. I shall now have the balence of the season to devote to the canvass. I may possibly be in the next legislature as a representative. If I think I can do you more good as a member than I can on the outside, I will accept. At any rate will come to some conclusion in the course of the next two weeks. I will come to Springfield as soon as I can, As there is many things in connexion with the Penitentiary that I wish to see you about. Capt Pitman has resigned his situation as Warden and I suppose it will devolve upon you to appoint his successor.

Now from my experience in the Penitentiary I am

prepared to say, that no Contractor or Lesse ought to be the Warden. Some person ought to be between the convicts and the Lessee. Now Gilbert Simonds our late Deputy Warden is the only Man now that I could recommend as Warden. he is from the Massuchusets Prison and has had several years experience in managing convicts. As the legislature made Capt Pitman Warden and made no provision for his sucessor, I think you have the right to appoint whom you please. As the State pays nothing for the service and the lessee must pay the expense there may a question arise, I should be afraid of the consequences if Col Buskmaster is appointed. Eastman will be down the first of the week. At any rate I would not be in a hurry, appoint Simonds if you think you can

Truly Yours tc

prepared to say, that no Contractor or Lesse ought to be the Warden.
