I yesterday recd a letter from Wm Pitt Kellogg making some enquiries about the surroundings here & wishing me to advise you of the facts. Our leading men as I stated are all in favor of yrself that I have conversed with, with one exception & that is on personal grounds. I to day met our Elector J B Burnett of Galva under the circumstances he is unqualifiedly for you <hr /> & also says---Col Stout of Galva who I believe you are personally acquainted with & Olaf Johnson the leader of the Swedes & others at Galva are pledged with their influence to you. Our representative Marcus M Ford who is from Galva is comparatively a newcomer with us. I have a very slight acquaintance with him as he has never been a public character at all but the opposite a very quiet, unassuming man, Burnett says he is uncommitted he will do what he can with him (Ford). Burnett will go to Springfield on Monday & as he (Burnett) will not put himself forward you had better yourself or some friend see him & urge upon him the necessity of setting Ford right---without knowing positively. I think Webster our Senator from Rock Island is all right. It seems to me wrong that we shod have the least contest for the Senatorship this winter & hoped there wod be but one candidate but we must make due allowances <hr /> for the aspirations of all men. our paper will come out with Editorials for you next week unqualifiedly. Still I suppose you are prepared & will expect strong efforts to advance the claims of other aspirants. Your letter accompanying, with congratulations on our glorious victory, was rec'd, and would have been answered sooner, but I supposed you would like to hear from our member, Mr. Dresser, and as I did not know how he stood, I thought best to wait a few days for an opportunity to see him. He lives 8 or 9 miles in the country and does not come to town often, so that I have not yet seen him. He has never spoken to me, nor I to him, on the subject of the Senatorship. I have only seen him once since the election, and that was at our jollification, where I had to make a speech; and in the rejoicing and gladness over the general result, the Senatorial <hr /> question was overlooked. Yours of the 29th is before me, and I regret that I cannot tell you how Mr. Dresser feels on the subject; but I think he will not hesitate to vote as he thinks a majority of the Union men of this county would go. However, he may be unable to make up his mind in regard to how the people stand, and would then be influenced by his friends and his own personal predilections. In regard to myself, you probably remember what I wrote to you four years ago - "that I hoped to see you succeed Douglas in the U. S. Senate." I have long been a personal admirer of your course in public life. I rejoiced at your election to Congress in 1850, and doubly rejoiced when you beat John Calhoun in 1852, notwithstanding the disadvantage you labored under of the then late gerrymandering of the District. Your course in regard to the Nebraska Bill made me feel proud of you, and your defeat in 1854 on account <hr /> of that course saddened and grieved me, to think that a good man should be beaten for doing right. The case made such an impression on my mind that I have never yet forgotten that Harris beat you just 200 votes. When at the State Convention in 1858 at Springfield, I heard you declare undying hostility to slavery, regardless of the opinions of others, I exclaimed in my heart: "Dick Yates is one of the best and noblest men of Earth - would to God the country were full of such!" In 1860 you were my first choice for Governor, and afterwards for the Senate. I am now speaking the truth frankly, and trust you will forgive me if I touch upon a subject disagreeable to you, and doubly so to me. Soon after you were elected Governor the report became current that you had one serious failing, that of drinking too hard. At first I bitterly denied it, and pledged my word that it was not true; and I continued to deny it until the evidence <hr /> became so strong that I could deny it no longer. Since that time I have heard the expression, "Glorious Dick Yates, he would be the best man in the world, were it not for his failing," until my heart has grown sick. Even as late as last night I heard a very intelligent man, our County Clerk, say: "What a splendid record Yates has made for himself. He would be my first choice for the Senate, President, or anything he might want, were it not for his drinking." To hear such expressions often must be very painful to your friends, and pleasing to your enemies. If the cause for such remarks could be removed, you can hardly imagine how much your friends would rejoice and bless you in their hearts, while they would also praise God for working the change. I feel deeply on this subject, and know that thousands of others do also, although they may not speak so frankly as I do. Governor, Your favor Nov 29th came duly to hand, and I immediately made it my business to ascertain what this sudden and systematic effort for Washburn and unceasing cowardly attacks on your private character meant, and I regret to inform you that there is a wide spread effort making here in the northern counties by Washburn that seems successful, to stir up amongst the leading political men an opposition to you, and where he or his friends cannot bring parties over to his support, they seek as a last resort to create a disaffection <hr /> toward you in favor of either Genl Palmer or Logan, not careing which. It is no time my dear Sir, through delicacy to conceal from you the arguments they make use of, trying I am satisfied to change a public sentiment now allmost unanimously for you, so that that public sentiment may not hang like a naked sword over their heads at Springfield and frighten them from their purpose to sacrifice you - but to their arguments: They say to politicians that you have no influence at Washington and cannot help your friends if you should wish to, or had the energy to. and then contrast the benefits of supporting such a man as Washburne who has influence and power and works to the last for his friends, over supporting yourself. To men who are not politicians but concientious men <hr /> like Mr Brown the member elect from our county, and to the people at large who cannot see the peculiar beauties of Washburne, they hiss into their ears that you are a drunkard past all hope of reform, talk of the disgrace Ills has already suffered from that cause in her senators, and talk of social vices to which they say you are addicted, untill they hope that through the mist their poisonous breaths surround you with, the people will fail to recognize their "gallant Dick Yates" I have had a long interview with Mr Lansing brought about in a manner so that he did not mistrust that it was of my seeking, much less that you were in the slightest degree connected with it or that I had ever read a line from you. Now what I am to say to you of that interview I hardly know, as <hr /> Mr Lansing and myself are on the the most intimate & confidential terms in political matters. What he said I managed so that he should volunteer is and it was too much of a confidential character for one to repeat. I can but give you my analysis of Mr Lansings character and you must draw your own conclusions, and even this I hesitate to do, and would not in the interest of any other man in Illinois. Mr Lansing is preeminently a politician. He always desires to be on the winning side and always will be if he can find out which that side is. Now if I was desirous of obtaining his support for anything, would in the first place try and convince him that I could succeed without his aid or at least was certain to with it. He is a good deal of a worker and likes to have this felt and appreciated. Like most other men, he works for himself and endeavors to think more of his own interests than of those of any friend. He has no attachment for any man that will stand in the way of his own interests. If there is any one thing in general that he aims at, it is that the North West part of the state shall have a more prominent position in our state politics and a more controling influence. I flattered myself that I could make him take an outspoken position in your favor, but I cannot do it without proceeding to schemes with him & which might do more hurt than <hr /> good. I can say one thing to you which I did not learn from Mr Lansing and that is the mere fact, that Mr Washburn and Mr L, went together to Genl Fuller this week, what their business was you know as well as I do. Mr L assured me that he had made no promises to Washburne. You can rely upon the support of our member Mr. Brown unless he should be made to believe at Springfield that it would be morraly wrong to support you. I have did my best to disabuse him here in regard to your vilifyers. His sympathies are all with you. He is a Methodist and a very concientious and upright man. I shall try and come to Springfield. Regretting this attempt of politicians to override her at the North the almost unanimous voice of the people and hoping and praying that their schemes may come to nought. Governor, Your favor Nov 29th came duly to hand, and I immediately made it my business to ascertain what this sudden and systematic effort for Washburn and unceasing cowardly attacks on your private character meant, and I regret to inform you that there is a wide spread effort making here in the northern counties by Washburn that seems successful, to stir up amongst the leading political men an opposition to you, and where he or his friends cannot bring parties over to his support, they seek as a last resort to create a disaffection <hr /> toward you in favor of either Genl Palmer or Logan, not careing which. It is no time my dear Sir, through delicacy to conceal from you the arguments they make use of, trying I am satisfied to change a public sentiment now allmost unanimously for you, so that that public sentiment may not hang like a naked sword over their heads at Springfield and frighten them from their purpose to sacrifice you - but to their arguments: They say to politicians that you have no influence at Washington and cannot help your friends if you should wish to, or had the energy to. and then contrast the benefits of supporting such a man as Washburne who has influence and power and works to the last for his friends, over supporting yourself. To men who are not politicians but concientious men <hr /> like Mr Brown the member elect from our county, and to the people at large who cannot see the peculiar beauties of Washburne, they hiss into their ears that you are a drunkard past all hope of reform, talk of the disgrace Ills has already suffered from that cause in her senators, and talk of social vices to which they say you are addicted, untill they hope that through the mist their poisonous breaths surround you with, the people will fail to recognize their "gallant Dick Yates" I have had a long interview with Mr Lansing brought about in a manner so that he did not mistrust that it was of my seeking, much less that you were in the slightest degree connected with it or that I had ever read a line from you. Now what I am to say to you of that interview I hardly know, as <hr /> Mr Lansing and myself are on the the most intimate & confidential terms in political matters. What he said I managed so that he should volunteer is and it was too much of a confidential character for one to repeat. I can but give you my analysis of Mr Lansings character and you must draw your own conclusions, and even this I hesitate to do, and would not in the interest of any other man in Illinois. Mr Lansing is preeminently a politician. He always desires to be on the winning side and always will be if he can find out which that side is. Now if I was desirous of obtaining his support for anything, would in the first place try and convince him that I could succeed without his aid or at least was certain to with it. He is a good deal of a worker and likes to have this felt and appreciated. Like most other men, he works for himself and endeavors to think more of his own interests than of those of any friend. He has no attachment for any man that will stand in the way of his own interests. If there is any one thing in general that he aims at, it is that the North West part of the state shall have a more prominent position in our state politics and a more controling influence. I flattered myself that I could make him take an outspoken position in your favor, but I cannot do it without proceeding to schemes with him & which might do more hurt than <hr /> good. I can say one thing to you which I did not learn from Mr Lansing and that is the mere fact, that Mr Washburn and Mr L, went together to Genl Fuller this week, what their business was you know as well as I do. Mr L assured me that he had made no promises to Washburne. You can rely upon the support of our member Mr. Brown unless he should be made to believe at Springfield that it would be morraly wrong to support you. I have did my best to disabuse him here in regard to your vilifyers. His sympathies are all with you. He is a Methodist and a very concientious and upright man. I shall try and come to Springfield. Regretting this attempt of politicians to override her at the North the almost unanimous voice of the people and hoping and praying that their schemes may come to nought. I would be, also highly pleased to be with you at Evanston. As I know many of the people there. But I think I can effect as much, perhaps more, from this place, in the way of securing your Election; as I am in correspondence with many of the members of the Legislature, whose letters will be sent here. He enlisted in 1861 when about 20 years of age in one of the Ohio regiments and when his time expired re-enlisted in the 23d Illinois Veterans. We have heard very little from him during his time of service, but we learn from others that he has <hr /> done his duty faithfully. He has no one to take any interest in his welfare that would be likely to see you or from whom you would hear. My object in writing you is to ask you to inquire into his conduct, and if it has been as creditable as has been represented, that you will give him a commission. While the battle was progressing he got out of ammunition and being close to a rebel <hr /> color-bearer picked up a stone, with which he knocked the rebel down and captured his flag.
