                  <text>John W. Lewis, Jr. began his political career in 1940 with his election to the Illinois House of Representatives. Lewis served in the Illinois House of Representatives until 1958 when he won election to the Illinois Senate. Lewis returned to the Illinois House of Representatives in 1962, serving until 1968. During his second time in the Illinois House, Lewis served as speaker. In 1969 Governor Richard Ogilvie named Lewis as the director of the Illinois Department of Agriculture. The following year Ogilvie named Lewis as the Illinois Secretary of State, a position he held until 1973. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Photographs in this collection include images of Lewis throughout his political career.</text>
