Our post office has been for a long time under democratic [illegible] and we have just circulated a petition to the P.M. General asking the appointment of James G. Campbell to that place. The petition is signed by all the prominent Republicans in town and vicinity and we feel ancious that he should get the appointment. he is a thorough giving [illegible] Republican and has done much for our cause in this vicinity - and will do much more. he is a member of our county Repubn Central Come and every way eminently qualified for the place.

I could think of no better place to make our prayer respected by the department than to ask of you to favor us by addressing this communication or otherwise as you in your enlightened discretion might think best.

Dear Sir,

There is nothing to justify this intrusion save your very gentlemanly attention and courtesy toward me during your term of service as Representative in Congress; and notwithstanding your well merited elevation which exalts you so far above me, I am yet impressed with the conviction that I may safely calculate on your generous sympathy in my behalf. To be brief then, I have relinquished my claim for extra services at Brooklyn Heights New York, and in place of which I have petitioned Congress for a pension for services rendered at Brooklyn and Harlem Heights New York during the war of 1812, which petition has been laid before the U. S. Senate and referred to the Committee on Pensions. A friend of mine with whom you may probably be acquainted, Col. Isaac R. Braucher wrote to Hon. Lyman Trumbull requesting him to exert himself for me, but as yet has not heard from him in reply. Your powerful agency assuredly would prove a host to effect it; and such an agency would undoubtedly ensure success and lay me under infinite obligations. The papers both printed and written, from the Military Academy West Point New York, stating the date of my graduating there in 1807, as also my

several promotions in 1807, 1808, 1810 and my resignation in 1811; as well as my services at Brooklyn and Harlem Heights N. Y. all accompany my petition as irrefragable proof of the correctness of my claim. Now prudence admonishes me to call a halt lest I prove irksome and regale myself with the pleasing anticipation in full bloom that I shall be honored with an early response which will henceforward put it in my power to subscribe myself with the most exalted consideration.

His Excellency Governor Richard Yates

Here Sir, the force of circumstances irresistibly impels me to solicit your aid to carry my affair successfully through. May I then presume to request a kind word from you in my favor to W. Trumbell and other gentlemen of your acquaintance to use his or their influence to further my business in Congress?

Dear Sir,

The friends of education were quite surprised at a proposition made in the Legislature of our State last winter, to abolish the Department of Public Instruction as an unnecessary expense and assign its duties to the office of Secretary of State.

The argument used was that at an early day Pennsylvania, Ohio, and some of the older States did not find a Superintendent of Public Instruction necessary.

You are probably aware that this State has a Congressional grant of lands of 1280 acres for each township, and that ultimately we ought to be educationally a leading State in the valley of the Mississippi.

If you can at your earliest convenience drop me a brief note, commending the importance of maintaining an efficient central supervision of public instruction from the very infancy of a commonwealth, and the folly of adopting the usages that were in vogue twenty five or fifty years ago, you would confer a

favor, and do much to strengthen those who are endeavoring to lay a solid foundation for the State.

Sir.

Some days ago, while here at Pittsburg, on a geological tour of exploration in the now famous mineral-oil regions of Pensylvania and Ohio, I received a letter from Gov. Koerner, informing me that you would stay at Washington some weeks longer, and that, although you had not arrived at a final decision, you contemplated making some change in the geological survey. A few days previous Ii had received a communication from Mr. Worthen, a copy

of which I enclose. While he evidently speaks without authority, its purport relieves me of all obligation towards the writer; and in case you should decide upon removing Mr. Worthen, I wish you would consider me an applicant for the place. Still I do not wish in any way to sollicit his removal, and you will recollect my mentioning to you, that by every change a certain amount of experience, and consequently of labor, would be lost to the state. If, however, you consider a change desirable, and wish to give more prominence to the development of practical results, I hope I may be able to give satisfaction if you and the other members of the Executive board should see fit to entrust me with the charge of the survey.

Last week i went to Washington, and thence to Philadelphia, where I had been

You will perceive that my private affairs as well as the survey suffer under the present state of suspence. You would, therefore, do me a great favor by causing, if possible, an action of the board in your absence, if that is to last much longer, or by giving me, at least, some intimation of your intentions.

But I cannot believe, that you did it merely for the purpose of reminding me that you were "Governor," especially when I have give the Republican party my entire influence and support as long as you have, and have contributed to your success nearly as much as any one else.

And still more especially, when I can prove in a court of justice if need be, that you are indebted to my personal friends who were in the convention for your nomination in lieu of Judd. I would have spoken of it to you when I was in Springfield in Feby. had I shall anticipated

a removal, The Office was not vacant & the commission ran till my successor was appointed and qualified. You have seen fit to remove me, without a cause, for you certainly had no reason personal or otherwise to do me an injury, unless you make it a rule to stiletto our friends and if that is your character, I have been very much mistaken in my estimate of it. I am not clamorous for executive favor. - and this that I had was a small one. - Indeed so small that it is scarcely worth quarrelling about, but I consider the removal a kind of a personal affront and don't like it and say so plainly. I am not however going to secede

I take the liberty of addressing these lines to you, in consequence of what B.F. Beekman a merchant in New York, Bro-in-law, informed me. You have written to him, you would do, as a favor he requested. I am an applicant for the Post Office in this City. The Appointment is made by the President of the U. S. and Beekman says, "you will say a word in my behalf." The Senator from this state, Mr. Terr Eyck knows me, so does our Representative in Congress, Wm Nixon, and they will, if referred to, Endorse me as a suitable person for the position. There are a number of applicants, who have petitions numerously signed, and letter from prominent Republicans, which may have a bearing on Mr. Nixon. But if the President through you, and some other of my friends can know of me, as a suitable person for Post-Master here, I flatter myself I will get the appointment, knowing that Wm Nixon, or Terr. Eyck, would say "Mr. Van Derveer would make a good officer"

Dear Sir

I see that Ward H. Lamon Esqr. the prosecuting Attorney for this circuit, is about to receive an appointment from Mr Lincoln. In that event there will be a vacancy which you will have to fill.

If consistent with your feelings I should like to receive that appointment, should such appointment have to be made and you may consider me an applicant therefor. The circuit is now reduced to three counties the remuneration will be from one thousand to fifteen hundred dollars a year which will be of considerable service to me at the present time. and in other respects would suit me, without interfereing with my other business.

Hoping that this may meet with your views, and receive your favorable consideration. I remain very Truly
